Three Sustainable Siding Options

DJK Siding offers a variety of siding options including fiber cement, cedar, wood composite, vinyl, metal, stucco, stone, and others. All of the siding options we provide have their advantages. However, there are three that are more sustainable than the others.

Cement Fiber Siding

If you feel like you’ve been hearing a lot about cement fiber siding, there is a good reason for it. This siding material is becoming a favorite among Denver homeowners and property managers a like.

Designed to Imitate Wood Siding

Originally, cement fiber siding was designed to replicate the look of wood siding, but to compensate for some of the issues that many may experience with wood siding such as water-damage and fire vulnerability problems. However, soon many were opting for cement fiber siding for it’s environmentally friendly aspects as it lasts longer than many other siding types.

Additional Benefits

Not only does fiber cement siding outlast many other siding options including its counterpart wood siding, but it also is:

  • Fire-retardant
  • Impact-resistant
  • Not prone to water-damage
  • Not vulnerable to termites
  • Does not need to be painted
  • Incredibly low maintenance

I Don’t Need to Paint It?

When you install cement fiber siding, depending on the type you select, you may no longer need to paint your home or multi-family property. Why? The “paint” is baked into the siding when it is manufactured. So, not only does this siding option last longer, allowing you to put off investing in replacing your siding, but you also can put off repainting.

This special siding material is made from cement, sand, and wood, and comes in horizontal boards and is installed much like other siding types. DJK Siding offers cement fiber siding in a variety of colors, textures, sizes, and panel styles — we use James Hardie® siding

Recycled Metal

Because metal siding is usually made from recycled metals, it is a sustainable option. However, be sure to check the source of your metal siding to make sure it really is made from recycled materials. Metal siding also provides many other additional benefits that make it an attractive option to many Colorado homeowners and property owners alike:

  • Fire-resistant
  • Long-lasting durability
  • Not susceptible to termites
  • Economical
  • Low maintenance

One of the disadvantages is that it can become dented, but it is still a viable siding material that can withstand the extreme weather experienced in Colorado.

Additional Benefits of Aluminum Siding

Aluminum siding has recently been making a comeback for all the benefits that it provides, as well as its modern manufacturing techniques and inventive use of materials. What’s more, aluminum siding comes in a variety of colors and can be painted. The only maintenance required is to occasionally wash the siding using mild soapy water.

Aluminum can be more expensive than siding options such as vinyl. However, its many benefits can easily offset additional costs.

Wood Siding

Not all wood siding is sustainable. Some siding sources are being harvested and manufactured at a faster pace than these sources can grow. However, there are those that are not being used as quickly as they are growing. If you are going to choose wood siding for its sustainability, you need to understand where it is coming from. Some of these sustainable sources include domestic hardwoods and even some rainforest varieties.

Benefits of Wood Siding

Sustainable wood siding provides several advantages to the Colorado homeowner and property owner. Wood exudes a classic and inviting look and texture and can be painted or stained to nearly any color. DJK Siding uses cedar as it is considered the most sustainable wood siding option. Additionally, cedar siding has these advantages:

  • Weather-resistant
  • Becomes more beautiful with age
  • Insect and decay-resistant
  • Resistant to bacteria, mildew, and fungi

There is Nothing Like the Real Thing

Though there are many other siding types that try to mimic the look of wood siding, and like many things in life, there is nothing like the real thing to add that classic, warm look to your building. However, it may require more maintenance than other siding options, but it requires less maintenance than other wood siding types. It is suggested that it is cleaned twice a year and inspected for termite damage.

Choosing the right siding option for your home, business, or property depends on your budget, maintenance requirements, and your desired look. To learn about your options, get a free project quote!
