Now is the time of the year to have your HVAC system checked. Many times, people will wait until winter to have this done, however, what this means is that you may have to compete with snow, sleet, and lower temperatures. While you’re at it, you should check your air filter and make sure it isn’t clogged up with dust and airborne allergens. Your air filter plays an important role in keeping your home’s indoor air quality in check and it needs to be clean in order for air to circulate easily throughout your home.
You should also be checking for general airtightness within your home. Homes that are not airtight will be inefficient and unsafe in some cases. For example, ice dams within your attic are partly caused by leaking air within your home and result in dangerous levels of moisture within your home. When warm air from the rest of your home makes its way into the attic, ice may melt and refreeze near the bottom of the roof. Once these icicles melt again, they could do serious damage to your home and lead to mold forming in the attic.
Check Your Windows
You should also be checking your windows this time of year, not just for airtightness, but to ensure there are no cracks and that they’re generally holding up well since last year. Since you may have had your windows cracked a lot throughout the summer, you may not have noticed any damage or wear on them. You should also be sure to apply caulk to your windows, ensuring they’re as energy efficient as possible throughout fall and winter.
